Valentine’s Day Ideas When You’re Single

January 26, 2009

If you use your imagination you can come up with lots of Valentine’s Day ideas when you’re single to enjoy the day although differently than couples.  People who are single can have just as much fun on Valentine’s Day too.  Don’t be depressed or sad if you are single and some of your friends are in a relationship, be happy for them and make plans to go out and enjoy yourself.  Granted, if you have just gone through a separation or breakdown of a relationship, getting through the day may seem very difficult.  This would be the time that family and friends can help you center your attention on other things.  There are ways and ideas that can shift your thoughts away from all the glitz and promotion associated with Valentine’s Day.

Even though Valentine’s Day has been perceived as a day for lovers, many single individuals have chosen to take things into their own hands and focus on friends and family instead of worrying about being without a significant other.  Most are aware that things change and their time will come so they make plans to participate in other interesting events.  They may call their friends and arrange a tobogganing or tubing party or even a skiing trip at their favorite hill.  Adults can enjoy a day of cascading down the side of a slippery slope on an inner tube just as much as the kiddies.  Assemble a group, go out to dinner and a movie.  You could host a game or card night and have friends or family over for some fun, or if you’re really imaginative, have a birthday party for Cupid.  How about an evening of bowling or mini-putting, you could have a competition to see who pays for the pizza afterward.  Nothing says that everything has to revolve around just couples, giving gifts, and sending mushy messages.  There is no law to say that on Valentine’s Day, single people need to be miserable.  Everybody can enjoy the day if they put some thought into it.

Helping young children in the family with their valentines cards for classmates and friends is one of many other Valentine’s Day ideas when you’re single.  Kids love the extra attention and help with their projects, and there might even be a laugh or two for you when they describe their friends as you go along.

There are ways to keep yourself focused on pleasant thoughts and out of the doldrums on Valentine’s Day if you don’t feel like venturing out.  Rent a couple of good movies you haven’t seen, throw some popcorn in the microwave, and enjoy a home theatre night.  Take that bestseller off the shelf, curl up and read about adventures in some far off land.  Indulge yourself and get yourself something you want or enjoy, you deserve it.  There is nothing to say that you can’t buy yourself a box of your favorite chocolates or a bouquet of flowers to brighten your day.  Try a new hobby or pull out that partly finished one in the closet and work on it.  Give your pet a bath and a brush, or take it out for a long walk.  Your love and attention could be focused on the dog or cat that is and always will be devoted to you, offers you unconditional love and loyalty, and is always there for you.  No one says that you can share your love on Valentine’s Day with your pet rather than a “significant other”.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be a depressing or lonely day for singles.  Valentine’s Day ideas when you’re single can be fun and entertaining if you let your imagination take over.  Think of something to do that would make others happy and smiling.  Consider volunteering some time at a community center or senior’s home, and maybe whip up a batch of homemade cookies to hand out.  You could make a difference in their lives, brighten their day, and feel good yourself for doing so at the same time.  Do not allow yourself to become sad or depressed on Valentine’s Day.  Pull yourself up by the bootstraps and remember that not only will things change before next year comes, but that you can enjoy Valentine’s Day even as a single person if you put some thought into it.
