Build Your Own Solar Panel

How Do Solar Cells Work?

May 6, 2009 · No Comments

In this age where many scientists and researchers are looking for ways to save fuel and energy, maybe one had probably heard the term solar cells and what it can do. For those who just heard it now, the simplest way of describing a solar cell is through a solar powered calculator. This calculator is powered by solar cells and does not need batteries anymore. The question now is how do solar cells work?

A calculator is only one of the many items where one may find solar cells. Solar cells may also be seen on emergency road signs, on buoys, call boxes, parking lots to power lights and many more. Generally, if there is light, the said items will work. Simply put, the question how do solar cells work will be answered by a simple statement that solar cells work because of light and in turn this makes it very easy to build a solar panel.

On a more scientific approach of explaining the question how do solar cells work, the solar cells found in the calculator are called photovoltaic cells or modules. The term photovoltaic means light electricity. On the other hand, modules mean a group of cells electrically connected and packaged in one surface.

Photovoltaic cells are made of very unusual materials called semiconductors. Normally, when light hits the cell, the light is absorbed by the semiconductor materials. The light is now converted into energy and that energy triggers the electrons loose. The photovoltaic cells are also composed of electric fields that allow the energy to a flow in a specific direction. When you build a solar panel, you ensure the electrons flow in a specific direction, so the cell’s voltage produces power.

Now that you understand how solar cells work, the next thing one should think about is whether it can power one’s home. Solar cells can, however, it will still cost you more than you have expected. It is true that sun light is free and abundant; the electricity created and generated by the photovoltaic system is not. The photovoltaic system requires a specific and costly hardware that will allow the solar cells to convert electricity from the sunlight it gathers and also to store electricity when there is no sunlight anymore. This hardware will cost you plenty but in the long run, will benefit you greatly. This is why many people are now looking to build a solar panel themselves which greatly reduces the cost.

If light is transformed into energy that may be used by any person on this planet, it is a great way to save the environment and the future for the next generation. If you are still confused on the question how do solar cells work? Just think of sunlight converted by a specific hardware into energy and then stored in a device that may be used to turn on your television or refrigerator.
