You are not alone if you feel Anxiety

Everyone will experience some type of anxiety during his or her life. Just hearing the phone ring in the middle of the night or hearing about an impending snowstorm can cause a measure of anxiety or nervousness.

When talking about anxiety people tend to me a lot more than a bit of nervousness over an unexpected event. The severity some people experience these symptoms can make them literally unable to do things such as meet new people, keep a job or even function outside their home. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), approximately 40 million American adults ages 18 and older, or about 18.1 percent of people in this age group in a given year, have an anxiety disorder

People may also suffer from more than one type of anxiety disorder, e.g. a person who suffers from OCD may also have post traumatic stress disorder as well.

Depression may also be characterised through obsessive compulsive disorder. Eighteen percent of people is almost one in five, so the next time you think that you’re the only one that feels the way you do or are the only one battling these symptoms, walk through the mall or think of a group of people you know, such as at work or your place of worship. Chances are that for every 5 or 6 people there, one of them has an anxiety disorder of one type or another. As said, entire fields of medicine are devoted to helping the sufferers of all of these types of anxiety disorders, and new medicines and other treatment options are being explored every single day.

About Manic Depression

Manic Depression is another name for Bipolar Disorder.  When an individuals mood swings are very irregular with sudden changes from good to bad this is commonly associated with being Bi-Polar.  It is just another in the many forms of depression.  Manic depression is not the same as just being sad or upset for over something in particular.  Manic depression is more serious than that.  The diagnosis of being Bi-Polar is just another stage of the disease of depression.  Millions of people in the United States are diagnosed with Manic Depression every year.

Two thirds of those people will never seek medical attention or even a diagnosis.  If you do not look for help than it is very hard to find a cure.  Mental illness is a red stop sign for many Americans, they don’t want to deal with it.  The negative image of someone who is “nuts” is just too much for them.  Brain diseases are generally quite complex.  It is hard to shake the stigma that comes with the diagnosis.  However, as with any form of depression, the affliction does not make you less a person.  You’re not crazy.  You have a condition like any other medical condition.  If it’s identified it can be cured. 

The causes of all forms of depression are still being examined in the medical profession.  Depression is caused by a wide range of issues.  It’s well known that consideration must be given to chemical factors, a person’s surroundings, and even their genes.  A chemical imbalance in the brain helps cause it.  We also know that stress can play a major role in the advent of depression.  Life is full of stress.  Issues at school, with loved ones, or just the daily grind can cause it.  Depression does not play favorites.  Both the rich and the poor contract it.  It is not racist.  Color or nationality provide no protection from this illness.

You have most likely heard that you are what you eat. When it comes to controlling your anxiety and depression this can be true. A lot of people can feel depressed because of the things they eat in there diet. If you are eating foods laden with fat, sugar and other non healthy substances, stop and start eating healthier. You may notice a change in your mood just by eating the right foods. Many people today just don’t eat enough healthy foods. Foods that are high in sugars and fat is

Bleeding Gums May Be Indicative Of Gingivitis

If you find blood on your toothbrush, even when brushing your teeth gently, you could be suffering from gingivitis. This is an inflammation of the gums caused by bacterial growth. It is found between the gaps in the gums and the teeth and on the teeth themselves. Additional symptoms of gingivitis may include but are not exclusive to a bright red or shiny appearance of the gums, gums that are tender when touched, swollen gums which are abnormally enlarged, mouth sores and bad breath or halitosis. Gingivitis is a periodontal (gum) disease that is very varied, and the etiology has been separated into both local and systemic causes which involve inflammation and or infection. This infection is able to destroy the supporting tissue of the teeth if it is left unattended. Resulting bad breath from the inflammation is able to cause loss of self-esteem, and in severe cases even social isolation. There is mounting evidence from medical research that gum diseases such as gingivitis may make people more prone to general inflammations of the body, heart disease, osteoporosis, pancreatic cancer, stroke and arteriosclerosis. The bacterial plaque and calculus (tartar); plaque accumulates in the gaps between the gum and teeth and tartar actually forms on the teeth and a way to treat this problem is by dental debridement. This means apart from a normal brushing routine, you seek the professional assistance of a dental hygienist or dentist to remove the plaque and tartar by scaling and root planing. Although the accumulations of these bacteria may be very small it can still produce toxins which cause gum inflammation. Over years the build up of this infection has the affect of causing deep fissures between the teeth and gum, affecting the ligaments, bone and gum tissue which holds the tooth in place. This loss of supporting tissue can cause the tooth to become loose, in which case it may fall out on its own or require extraction. Professional dental cleaning is suggested traditionally, for every 6 months. However in the case of recurring gingivitis inflammation it may be recommended for every 3 – 4 months, as it takes plaque approximately 3 months to grow back again. Author: Scott W. We Must Help Those Stuck in Addiction…

A coworker told me a story about her recent jury duty and how that experience really opened her eyes to the realities of drug abuse. She was surprised to learn how people addicted to drugs often end up living.

The trial was about a drug dealer that had killed one of his customers. The addict had been a former tough man contest winner. He knocked the over-six-foot tall drug dealer out in one punch. When the dealer awoke, he went home to get a gun.

When he returned to the scene he shot and killed the man who had knocked him out cold. During the trial, this peddler of street pharmaceuticals admitted that this was a matter of pride for him. Drug rehab centers are needed.

Unfortunately, that pride led to the death of another junkie. He was also rewarded with a twenty year all-expense-paid incarceration courtesy of the State. Aside from the inherent sadness of this story, my co-worker also discovered how the life of a drug user often becomes a depressing reality.

She found that there were people that would actually rent garages and sheds to have a place to stay. Their drug habits apparently took so much of their money that all they could afford was a garage or shed to rent. I can’t imagine how horrible that would be in the winter time.

My friend was also surprised to see all the toothless drug addicts that came to the trial to testify. Drug use itself can sometimes destroy teeth. However, it is also very likely that these people don’t have the means to care for their teeth or don’t care too. I imagine that if you were living in a garage or a shed, you might not have access to running water either.

Most tooth loss is due to gum disease rather than cavities. People who have access to toothpaste and dental floss can’t usually prevent gum disease even with those tools. Whatever the reason, these drug users had lost many of their teeth.

Tooth loss may be just one of the consequences of drug addiction. When a habit takes over your life to such an extend that you no longer care about how or where you live, you have definitely fallen into a pit that might be hard to climb out of. Alcohol rehab for addiction is also important.

Some people that end up in that pit were once very functional people in society. That was true before the addiction took over. Some have children that they can no longer care for. Worse, they may not be willing to nurture anything except their addiction.

Even Hollywood occasionally shows the sad reality of how drug addicts live in movies such as, Less than Zero. Robert Downey Jr. plays Julian, a drug addict from an above average upbringing who turns to male prostitution to pay for his drug use.

His friends try to rescue him, but it is too late. He has gone too far and dies of an overdose. The end scene shows his friends crying as they drive down the highway with the head of their dead friend’s body resting on one of their shoulders where it fell the moment after he died.

Don’t let anything like that happen to you or someone you love. Drug use is serious. If you are in any stage of drug use, including the very beginning stages, you should probably look at a seeing your doctor to find out what your options are before it is too late.

Depression and anger-sometimes uncontrollable emotions

As people we have been given emotions.We have emotions that are positive.  But we also have negative emotions.In this piece, let’s examine some emotions that can be negative at times.

Why we need to take a look at these two is because they are emotions that could need professional help.  We all experience joys.We all have gone through emotions such as sadness.We have those times when anger can be experienced by us as well.But there will be instances when we have our emotions get the best of us.  This is speaking from experience being a therapist San Diego.

First lets have a look at anger.  This is a very volatile emotion.All people have had the experience of this emotion.But for some people it sometimes gets the best of them.When I am talking about it getting the best of them I am referring to them getting out of control.They often times may take their anger and express it in violent terms.That is the reason why it is so dangerous.  I have seen it go too far too many times doing anger management in San Diego.That is the moment when it must be handled professionally.  Because it can cause damage to other people.

The other emotion we may experience is depression.  Doing depression counseling has allowed me to see how this emotion can be dangerous as well.Often times this type of emotion isn’t going to harm people directly.But this is one of those emotions that can cause harm to one’s self.  There are many causes.  Sometimes it is a chemical imbalance.  That is when it needs to be treated with medicine.Or it might be an event in our lives that cause the depression.Either situation, when there is someone who experiences it, they could need some help.

As you can plainly tell these emotions need to be kept in check.Whehter you are talking about anger or depression, those emotions both can cause serious issues.  Either to those around you or yourself.  So if you see somebody experiencing these emotions excessively, they may need counseling.It is going to be the best for everyone.

Depression Treating – A Closer Look

You have to understand depression before you can treat it.  Depression is no joke; it is a very serious disease that affects millions and millions of Americans each and every year.  The most difficult part of it is that about 2/3 of those people won’t seek treatment.  The old stereotypes of mental illness still bother too many people.  People consider their reputation and what others will think of someone who is nuts.  In order to treat depression it must be diagnosed.  Diagnosis doesn’t happen while the sufferer hides the problem.  It’s a vicious circle.

Depression has many causes.  Depression can be brought on by biological, emotional, environmental and physical factors.  The genetic link cannot be ignored as well.  Family history plays a major role in many diseases that are passed on down the line.  It is not just family history but family life in general.  The stress of everyday life can be brutal.  For some there is a constant struggle to survive from week to week.  For others there is that constant battle to perform satisfactory in a competitive society.  Then there are the circumstances where individuals have been abused physically, emotionally or sexually and are overcome with despair.  The list goes on and on.

In the early stages depression is often hard to diagnose.  It’s hard to see the symptoms even if a loved one suffers from this illness.  Everyone fights some mild distress once in awhile.  It’s not uncommon.  The affects of depression go much deeper.  Early detection is no longer an option when your whole life begins changing.  People with depression feel lonely and fed up with general living.  Signs of hope in their lives are gone.  Their sleep habits and simple enjoyments in life begin to be effected in a negative way.  At this point treatment has become literally a matter of life and death.

A form of mental disease is depression.  That isn’t to say those who suffer from it are somehow lower than others.  It does not insinuate that you are a nut case or crazy.  You have an illness that strikes the mind and requires medical attention to be cured, that’s it.  Those with mental illnesses are head cases is something that is from the past.  If you are even slightly under the impression that you may be suffering from depression you can take a depression test online.  You can find a depression test online that will give you a basic idea of where you stand.  If the results are positive then you can seek further information and even treatment.

The Key to a Successful Marriage

I have witnessed, both within my own family, in the outside world and in my practice, what can happen in a relationship if there is no common bond that can actually bind a couple together.

Well, let me digress (or maybe, progress) and say a bit about getting together as a couple in the first place: even if there is a strong attraction, be it physical, mental or emotional: Love; That does not seem to be enough to keep a couple together; the body will wither, the mind will change and the emotions will flutter. And love may turn into a dependency or habit. Unless, there is a third entity; the glue that binds the one to the other; the bond that binds, a mutual goal and lifetime commitment to it. A common commitment to a external force or ideal, that is greater than both of you, that is stable and enduring, will see you through the tough times that will inevitably come …

In my opinion, there are two good bonds; children and Religion or a Spiritual Practice (to be more politically correct, or any other proven external disciplinary way of life that both parties agreed to commit to whole-heartedly, abide by, follow and emulate; the goal). With both of these present, the chances are multiplies exponentially. But, even with both of these, there are no garantees.

Without these, there is no common bond; it’s just two people living separate lives together: convenient for a nice meal, some ambience, safe sex, and the occasional meaningful conversation …

So, both parties must have the same intent or lifetime goal. Otherwise, both sides will be resentful, because, in any situation, for any important decision, no compromise can satisfy both of the parties, because their primary motivating goals are different; or they have no primary motivating goals and “just don’t feel like it” at the time. And so there is no improvement in the situation and resentments, anger, etc. build; and there is no possibility for a long-term relationship.

Love may sometimes seem to be obscured by a tendency towards negativity, insecurity and fear/anxiety. But this is who the person is at the moment; and they are perfect the way they are.

Love may sometimes seem to be obscured by a tendency towards not wanting to be so depended upon by the other, for their happiness, security and emotional wellbeing. But this is who that person is at the moment; and perfect the way they are.

Much of this may stem from residual family entanglements. Control issues coming from the family of origin may be the cause of some behaviors. Some behaviors may come from family insecurity issues.

There are a few key issues that need to be kept in mind: Trust! Honesty! One must trust the other, as the right hand trusts the left. And one must be honest and trustworthy, inside the relationship and in the world at large as well; trusting yourself, being honest with yourself and trusting your partner and being honest with your partner, and being trustworthy and honest in all your dealings in the world. In other words, your thoughts, speech and actions should always be in line with a clear conscience.

There are times when you will feel rejected or abandoned, based on your perception of the situation. There is usually no reason to feel this way; from the other’s standpoint, it’s not about you, it may be about their family control issues.

At times you may feel that you would appear weak if you give in to the desires of the other. There is no reason to feel weak by giving in: remember the bond that binds; you can show your compassion and accommodation of what may be the other’s family insecurity issues.

Besides the above mentioned, or perhaps, because of the above mentioned, there may be a lack of real compassion and empathy on the part of both parties for each other. To see the world from the other persons heart and to trust the other person, that they are doing the best they can. To see them as perfect, the way they are. (Don’t get me wrong: I’m not saying that there is no room for improvement.) To realize the person is always more important than any ideology or material object or goal; the relationship comes first.

Perhaps ask; what’s the worst thing that can happen if the worst thing happens. Most of the time, when the dust settles, nothing too spectacular. Again, the third entity, the bond that binds, the trust in that everything that happens is only good.

There is a need for genuine compassion and complete acceptance of the other as perfect as they are; acknowledgement and acceptance of each others needs and idiosyncrasies and the commitment and willingness to live with them as they are, for as long as they are that way. And to accomplish this, we need the help of a special “glue” to bind one love to the other. A “third party” that has historically been present in all successful marriages. And continues to be a vital element in marriages today.

The other person; their feelings, hopes, dreams, goals must be your own as well: you are one; heads and tails of the same coin. One person, soul, living life in two bodies.

It says, “All beginnings are difficult”. And while this may be so, heading in the right direction, with the right foot, for the right reasons, towards the right goal, will ensure that the trip will be worthwhile and pleasant for you and for all of those who love you …
