Are there alternatives to the medical model for treating and understanding mental health disorders?

The medical model in the field of mental health treatment involves identifying the symptoms of a disorder and   matching  those symptoms to  a list that has been denoted in the DMV-IV, the psychiatric book of disorders used by most in the mental health profession. A label is then determined for the disorder, and psychiatric drugs are  generally prescribed. Very simply, the medical model as it is commonly used, which is popular in many psychiatric circles, runs under the assumptions that mental health disorders are chemical imbalances that can be adjusted and controlled with what is considered to be appropriate drugs.     

Is this simplistic model for understanding mental health disorders accurate? Quite simply, no. The simple medical model is not an accurate way of viewing mental health disorders. Most who have undergone treatment based on the the use of the “medical model” find themselves disappointed. There are no substitutes for working hard at one’s mental health, with one’s relationships and family. There is no magic pill that can alleviate life’s many interwoven problems or heal emotional  wounds.

Psychiatric medication for mental health disorders, including those prescribed for ADHD/ADD, depression and major depression, and bipolar disorder (BD), as well as other mental health disorders, merely address symptoms but do not address the underlying problems behind the mental health disorder.

One might liken it to taking an aspirin for pain. An aspirin will help one to feel a less pain if there is a headache, but it doesn’t  address whatever might be the source of the pain, and after the aspirin’s positive effects are over, one again needs to  take another aspirin to get the same pain relief. Psychiatric drugs for psychiatric disorders are very similar. Most who have written on the subject, including those who support the general use of drug treatment for mental health disorders, agree that drugs used in treatment based on the “medical model” address symptoms, but do not address the actual disorder. It It can be comparable to a “chemical band-aid”.

It should be noted that there are other models of mental health which are much more in depth and complete in  addressing the many interconnceted factors of mental health. One of those models of mental health is the bioecological model which was developed by Urie Bronfenbreener, Ph.D., who is the originator of the Head Start preschool program in the United States and a widely respected scholar on the subject of mental health, (recently deceased). Dr. Bronfenbrenner developed the thought that social factors on many levels can be and are in fact involved with mental health. While genetics may predispose a person towards mental health difficulties, they do not in general cause mental health disorders. Rather, it is more probably a combination of  genetics, with environmental and other factors that are involved. There is a multi-tiered approach to psychology which is more accurate and takes all of the many factors into consideration than does the “chemical imbalance” theory, known as the medical model.

Another approach to mental health models, is that of Positive Psychology, developed by Martin Seligam who developed has  ideas at Penn State University, U.S.. Rather than starting on the the idea of identifying and labeling disorders, along with subsequent treatment, rather, it starts on a positive foundation, with the goal of building on one’s positives and working towards goals. Positive psychology is a mental health theory that is pretty mainstream and widely accepted, and the application of which can circumvent the overtreatment through psychiatric drugs that many have experienced.

Art, as a learned coping skill can be an excellent therapy for many mental health difficulties. It can be an effective method for children to develop self respect and can be of benefit in behavioral health applications for youth.

Art therapy is a professional therapy administered by board certified therapists, who use art along with therapy to help those with mental health disorders to open up and express themselves, as well as to heal  from emotional wounds from the past and present.

Both art as self-help skill, and professional art therapy can be an effective part of the healing process in such disorders as:

It can be an effective  part of professional and self help therapy for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).  For those with Bipolar Disorder, art and art therapy can be of much help for both adults, teens and children to balance mood swings associated with BD. Art can be a type of  natural mood stabilizer. Both arts therapy and art can be an effective part of  a healing process for those with and related disorders. When considered in a professional context it can be a way to help those with the symptoms of schizophrenia  to open up and express themselves. It is effective when young adults have a difficult time opening up to a professional.

Art and arts therapy have been used effectively for children with autism spectrum disorders.  An art teacher from New Jersey who works with children who have special needs feels that teaching children and teens who have various degrees of autism  art in his summer programs has helped them to develop the ability to focus. He describes how one of his students showed much improvement and went on to hold a full-time job. Art was part of what helped many of these children with autism.

A large percentage of those who have suffered from child abuse, art and arts therapy can be of much value in recovery. Causes of Generalized Anxiety Disorder

People who feel overly worried or anxious daily might be suffering from generalized anxiety disorder or GAD. Symptoms include extreme anxiety or worry about normal situations.

Stressful events such as abuse, divorce, moving, changing jobs or losing a loved one can trigger real fear, dread and anxiety, These feelings can worsen or linger on if they are left unaddressed. A person may subconsciously replay these feelings whenever they are stressed, and this just leads to a cycle of anxiety. The neurochemical composition of the brain is also seen as a cause of generalized anxiety disorder. Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters are linked with anxiety disorders. This happens because the brain is producing the wrong signals so the person has a distorted perception of the situation.

Manic depressive disorder, also known as bipolar disorder, is a kind of mood disorders where the person has mood swings that can cause them not to respond appropriately to daily challenges. Left untreated, this can become a severely disabling psychiatric condition.

In most cases, people with the bipolar II disorder experiences depression more often than hypomania. That is up to 37 times longer than bipolar I.

In 2003, a medical research conducted by Rober Hirschfeld, M.D., of the University of Texas, Galveston found bipolar patients fared worse in their depressions than unipolar patients. When compared in terms of disability, lost years of productivity and potential for suicide, manic depressive disorder is now recognized as the most menacing aspect of the illness.

Dishonesty, Enabling, and Alcohol Relapse

It seems that by protecting the alcohol dependent person with falsehoods and deceit to those outside the family, these well-intentioned family members have in essence created a circumstance that makes it easier for the alcohol addicted individual to carry on and press forward with his or her injurious, detrimental daily life.

To be sure, rather than helping the alcohol addicted individual and themselves, these family members have in truth become enablers who have unintentionally helped deteriorate the alcoholic’s drinking problem even more.

Perhaps the real downside of this is that the alcohol addicted person will continue drinking in an irresponsible and abusive manner and go through diverse “alcohol side effects.” Some of these side effects include employment difficulties, poor health, deteriorating relationships, diminished mental functioning, legal issues (such as getting arrested for one or more DUIs), and considerable financial problems.

Attention deficit disorder, also known as ADD, may be affecting you and your family if your child has been diagnosed with this problem. Because your child spends so much time at school, being able to work with your child’s teacher will be very important in dealing with this within your family. Here are some ways to make this a part of the solution to your personal situation.

I do not believe that there is an ADHD diet but I do believe that Omega 3 fatty acids can help a child to concentrate and can lessen the symptoms of ADHD. Why do I believe this ? I have been reading up on the research carried out by the Inflammation Research Foundation. In one experiment they gave ADHD children ( admittedly a very small number of them) large doses of Omega 3 fatty acids which are normally found in fish and fish oils. The children were typical ADHD kids in that they had problems of concentration, impulsivity and hyperactivity. Normally kids with ADHD have very low levels of these fatty acids also known as EFAs (essential fatty acids). Well, after two months on these high doses of Omega 3 supplements, the kids were found to have higher levels of the fatty acids and their ADHD symptoms were much improved. Their inattention levels were almost halved and their hyperactivity scores fell as well. There have been other experiments too and all point in the same direction so I always tell parents just to add these supplements to their children’s diets as one of the best ways of complementing any of the treatments for ADHD they may be following.

My Twitter experience felt very much like a reaction to my telling the truth about these issues our culture wants to disavow. If I as a professional am impacted, imagine how much more so this stigma impacts survivors, I was reminded.  The silencing, minimizing and blaming that can occur when a survivor tries to tell their story is a whole other level of traumatization.

This experience reminded me that visibility and conversation about trauma-related topics is crucial.  It is why I see blogging and using social media to be an important part of my work as a trauma therapist.  By speaking out about trauma and its impact I hope to support those who must live with it and to educate those who do not yet understand.

Let us say that your ADHD child has temper tantrums and meltdowns, is aggressive, obnoxious and acts out at school. In addition he may be a defiant child and full of the victimisation syndrome which these kids often have. How do you teach them to be responsible for their actions ? That is precisely what parents learn in a behavior modification program and it is sometimes used as the only way of treating ADHD without meds, although I personally do not agree with that.

A diagnosis of attention deficit disorder does not have to be the end of the world. By educating yourself on what to expect, being flexible and open to solutions, and including your child’s teacher as part of your team, your child will feel the love and support necessary to deal with being labeled as having attention deficit disorder

With some work, and patience you can overcome panic and anxiety disorders.  You already know how nerve-wracking it can be to have a panic attack.  Sometimes the fear of getting another panic attack can take over your life and get in the way of everyday things.  Sometimes you might even feel like you’ll never find panic attack relief.

Since no two people are the same, there are many paths to recovery.   Depending on where you are starting out, you will likely need to try out a few things before you discover what is most effective for you.  But there are a few common tips that you can use no matter what.

Identify the trigger — Firstly, you will want to find what is triggering your panic attack to begin with.  Sometimes people will claim that their panic attacks don’t have a trigger.  Even though things might look that way, if you’re willing to look beneath the surface, you may find that they tend to follow times of high stress, such as working late nights to finish a project or studying for an exam.  Once you figure out the cause, you can start to resolve that issue. Write down a very stressful time in your when you would have panic attacks and look for any patterns.

Adapt Your Lifestyle –  It is very critical that you have the flexibility to adjust your life around if you want to find relief from panic attacks.  Ensure that you are eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise, and getting a solid night’s sleep.  Don’t discount the benefits these simple things can have on your health.  Monitor you intake of caffeine, nicotine, and sugar as well.  They can make you tense and jumpy, possibly triggering a panic attack.

Lower Your Stress Levels — You can make your life much easier by removing unneeded stress.  Cut back on things that aren’t essential.  Consider adding some relaxing activities to your routine like taking walks, listening to relaxing music, or taking up meditation.  Just taking some time for yourself can have a huge impact on your recovery.

Seek Out Help — Maybe you can talk to a friend or therapist that you trust.  The above points will help you to find panic attack relief can take you a long way, but don’t discount the benefits of sharing your experience with someone you trust.  This person should be non-judgmental and trustable.

The above tips should form a good foundation for your recovery from panic and anxiety disorders.  Panic attacks can wreak havoc on your life, but you never give up trying to regain control of your life.

A Young Man’s Excessive Drinking Results In a DUI, Mental Health Issues, and Time Incarcerated in Jail

Jesse had an exceedingly difficult time keeping a job. In truth, due to his languor and lack of incentive, he was out of work far more often than he was employed. And when he did land a job, he had an exceptionally hard time getting to work when his shift began, he typically got less than passing performance assessments, and he called off sick so habitually that he usually got fired a week or two after he started working. Obviously, one of the results of Jesse’s shameful employment track record was the fact that he was virtually without a dime on a day-to-day basis.

Regardless of Jesse’s less than great employment track record and financial lack of attention, however, somehow, someway he made it his business to drink heavily much of the time.
