Best Dog Food – By-Product Debate

July 26, 2009

I started to get serious about health issues for dogs once mine started having them at the age of six. Instead of wasting time watching TV, lately, I have been studying ways to ensure my dogs have the longest lives possible.

People who are acquainted with me also know that I think the main reason for health problems with dogs is the commercial dog food. I have made it my purpose in life to educate people about the best dog food and strongly recommend homemade dog food.

The truth is most people, even if they do switch to a homemade diet, will need to supplement with some brand of commercial food. That is why I spend so much time on the best dog food subject.

There is much debate about the addition of meat by-products as well as some other controversial ingredients. This can be identified as chicken, poultry, beef or just about any kind of meat with the phrase by-product behind it.

So what is it and is it good for your dog? If you do research on the subject you will find two groups, one defends by-products as good, and the other saying it is toxic for your pet.

It may depend, lets look at what defines a poultry by-product.

“Poultry by-products consists of the ground, rendered, clean parts of slaughtered poultry carcass, including necks, beak, feet undeveloped eggs and intestines, exclusive of feathers, “except in such amounts as may occur unavoidably in good processing practices”The problem is you don’t know what is in a by-product ingredient at any give time. There is no standard that says there are so many feet and so many intestines or any consistency of nutritional value what so ever. The truth is none of this stuff is fit for human consumption.

Some will debate that a wild dog will consume anything that is found on the by product ingredient list and this is why it is alright to give this to your dog. Although there is some truth to it, it is like saying that humans could eat from dumpsters and garbage cans if necessary.

Because I want the best possible nutrition for my dog, I’ll avoid those foods that contain by-products and stick with the best dog food with natural ingredients.

Mike Considine has devoted a big part of his life researching the pet food industry looking for the best dog food for his two dogs. His top ten list shows how to select the best dog food brands.

What Does it Take to Make the Top Ten Best Dog Food List?

July 8, 2009

Do the big named brands of dog food make them the best dog food selection for your dogs? Brand names are often well advertised but that does not mean they are what is right for your dog.

Your vet, unfortunately, does not have the best dog food available for your canine.   Just because a dog food is sold by your veterinarian does not mean it is the healthiest food available.

I have done many hours of research trying to find out how to pick the best dog food, ever since my Beagle started having Seizures. After some research I could determine the contents of dog food better than my own food.

With more research I learned a lot more about the importance of healthy ingredients in dog food.

It didn’t take me long to figure out that I would have to learn some things about the Pet food industry in order to give my dogs the best dog food  that’s out there.

One can find many articles written by me, which state my conclusions showing the manner in which Industry is using weakness in laws and how they are actually having no outside control and are allowed to cheat pet owners with well masked wordings on labels and packaging.

There is no law to assist us for selecting most suitable dog food apart from the law that makes it compulsory to mention the contents on label in descending order of weight of ingredients. So you need to look at the first ingredient and if it reads corn, then it doesn’t matter if the bag says Turkey dinner, the main ingredient is corn.

Don’t wory about what a product is called, just check the ingredients. After you make it through the first couple of ingredients that you think you understand what they are, that is where the fun begins.

As you start to look at ingredient lists, your going to see healthy sounding ingredients like dried egg products.  Don’t be fooled this particular ingredient is anything but healthy.  The truth is that what goes into dried egg products is not fit for human consumption, so why would we feed it to our dogs? Another good one, is Chicken by-products, if you think this has anything to do with chicken you would serve your family, think again.

Sure, you might kind of have an inkling as to what these ingredients are, but what about all the rest of it?

This why I was happy to find during my research a very strict guide of what to look for on a dog food label, and this is what I use to find the best dog food, for my dogs.

Out of 150 brands of dog food, just 10 were of good quality that I would consider feeding to my dog.   When you compare the labels on these 10 to the brands your Vet are selling, you are going to start to take healthy feeding decisions out of the hands of your Vet and do it yourself.

Listen to Dog Expert’s Interviewed About Caring for Your Dog

June 8, 2009

In the past I’ve wrote many articles and blog posts on healthy dog food, but today I would like to talk more about everything else it takes to raise a dog.

Pet parents around the world all always wishing they knew how to get answers to simple questions like how to take a trip with their dog, or even simpler yet how to get them to sit on command. Did you ever wish you knew how to make your own flea and tick repellant from all natural ingredients?.

One of the side benefits about my hundreds of hours of research on dog food has been that I have been able to find reliable resources for answers to all of the questions above. This has allowed me to be a better parent for my two dogs.

Finding information on the Internet is not a problem, but trusting the answers should be a major concern. You need to know you are dealing with experts not some BS artist out to take your money. We want to know that what we do is best for our pets

I got to thinking on how great it would be if I could call and expert in the field for all the questions I had. I called my vet so often that he stopped returning my calls, which was probably the best thing anyway.

Most vets are not experts in things like training your dog, so they can’t give you good advice on this and many other question you’ll have.

Most people don’t even think about the fact that you should find out what breed is going to fit best with your family and your home

Because it is so difficult to find good answers to pet problems, dog parents usually just do the best that they can, this sometimes works out, but often it ends up being bad for both them and their dogs.

Sadly many reason people turn their dogs over to pet shelters is because they either picked the wrong breed for their family, or some other problem they didn’t know how to find answers to correct..

Today I’m happy to say that I have found expert answers to all of these questions and more. I would be happy to share them with you and help you become a better parent to your dog.

The Top 9 Best Dog Food Brands on the Market

June 5, 2009

With a growing number of pet owners contemplating the connection of their dog’s health to what he eats, they are wondering about the best dog food brands.Really all you need to do to get the best dog food brand is to read and understand the list of ingredients on the label.

It would be great if that was the case, but with the encrypted code being used by the pet food companies, it is not that easy.

When you search for healthy foods for humans the task seems fairly easy, however when checking for the best dog food brands the task becomes very daunting and the facts are certainly unclear and confusing.

The trouble here is that pet food producers are allowed to incorporate ingredients that are not for human consumption in their foods. The companies not only use by-product in their food, but are legally allowed to mask how unhealthy it is by using healthy sounding names in the ingredients list.

You would think if you seen dried egg product listed as an ingredients in your dog food that that would be a healthy thing. The fact is that these foods can contain eggs, egg shells, and similar tissues which are unfit for human consumption.

While doing my research to find the best dog food brands, I ran across a list of 68 ingredients that are used by some of the best brands, that should give you cause to stop feeding these brand to your dog. 28 of these 68 are actually deadly ingredients, and why they won’t kill your dog today, they will shorten her life considerably.

I also found a free confidential dog food report written by a guy that has hired a testing firm to find the best dog food brands in North America. Sorry I can not re-print that article here because of the copyright.

I do know that there are only nine types of dog food in America that were deemed healthy enough to actually end up on the best dog food brands list.

27 brands didn’t make the list after consideration, and there are some big names that didn’t make it. Some of the big brand names such as Science Diet and Iams were not of sufficient quality to pass the tests to get on the list.

The report continues to be updated, and in this 2nd addition there are six brands that have been removed due to reasons listed in the report.
Matter of fact the report lists the reason why good or bad for every brand in the report.

After becoming outraged on the things I found out about what they put into dog food, I changed my two dogs to a homemade diet. I’ll be the first to admit that at times it is just necessary to have a commercially made back-up. This is why it was so import to me to find the best dog food brands that would be healthy for my dogs.

Do You Know What’s Really in Your Dog Food?

May 2, 2009

A friend of mine that knew my Beagle was having health issues sent me a dog food ingredient report that opened my eyes. This report gave me detailed information about 68 ingredients that are hazardous to my dog’s health and are regularly found in many dog foods

The information in this report is so important for the health of your dog, that I am tempted to post it here. Sadly it is copyrighted and because I am so grateful that the Author shared this information I will respect his rights, but I will share the highlights and tell you how to get a free copy.

There are 68 ingredients found in many major brands of dog food listed in this report. Below are just a few.

Menadione Sodium Bisufate
Beef Tallow
Corn Germ Meal
Ethoxyquin
Blue Dye #2

The ingredients in the report are all earn a ranking from Deadly to Useless and each have an explanation why With twenty-eight of the ingredients listed in the report earning a ranking of deadly, it is important to know if any are listed on the label of the dog food you’re feeding tonigh

It is hard to understand why these dog food companies would jeopardize the health of our dogs just to make more profit, but this report is proof…

They are smart enough to know that unless they make a big mistake like they did in 2007, their dog food won’t kill your dog quickly.. No there won’t be a mass killing, but millions of dogs will continue to die too young.

The dog food industry thinks we should be happy if our dog sees 12, but they should be living to see 20.

This report will show you what the ingredients listed on the label of your dog food really means, Trust me it’s not what is seems to be, and the difference can be slowly killing your dog.

Dog Beats The Grim Reaper With a Homemade Dog Food Diet.

April 20, 2009

Experts agree with findings that most commercial dog foods are slowly killing our pets. Therefore the only responsible thing to do is change to a homemade dog food diet. Most pet foods are deficient of important nutrients and have ingredients that should be on a toxic waste manifest.

The labeling laws for the pet food industry are a joke, and they are able to hide ingredients like listed below.

Indigestible waste products

Colors & dyes

Pesticides

Chemicals

Harmful preservatives

Antibiotics

Dead, diseased, disabled or dying animals prior to their visit to the slaughter house.

Animal by-products including some recently euthanized pet cats or dogs.

Basically anything leftover that is not fit for human consumption ends up in animal and pet food. At the rendering factory the cook this toxic waste at such high temperatures that it looses any nutritional value it might have had for you dog.

Because of the junk being sold as dog food, I started to research on how to best make homemade dog food.

My research tells me that the most important thing about a good homemade dog food diet, is that it must be well balanced. This should consist of 40 percent meat, 30 percent vegetables and 30 percent starch.

I soon found out that I needed help to ensure any homemade dog food diet that I selected was nutritionally balanced and complete. That is why I spent many hours doing the research before I changed to a homemade dog food diet.

I was scared that if I didn’t find a proven well balanced diet that it could cause long term health problems for my pets.

The experts say that any homemade dog food should have both a good source of protein and carbohydrates.

Here are some examples of good sources of protein and carbohydrates for homemade dog food diets.:

roasted skinless chicken breast

pan browned ground beef

broiled pork loin

broiled lamb chop

baked Atlantic salmon

hard boiled whole egg

cottage cheese

tofu

long-grained white rice

long-grained brown rice

baked white potatoes

baked sweet potatoes

enriched, cooked spaghetti

cooked oats

cooked barley

Do you see a pattern here? These foods could all be found on the menu of any good restaurant. I don’t see anything on that list that would have to be marked not fit for human consumption, like the animal by products used in pet food by some companies.

Finding a list of healthy ingredients was the first step, but it still took hours of research to learn how to prepare a well balanced homemade dog food diet,. We needed to make certain that our recipes provide the nutrition our dogs need for a lifetime of good health.

I’ll be truthful this is more work than opening up a bag an pouring a cup of toxic waste into a bowl but! What would it be worth to you o have your dog around for five to eight years longer then normal?

Pet Owner Buries Best Friend After Dog Food Recall

April 12, 2009
Pet owners around the world are back to business as usual when it comes to feeding their dogs. After 2007 dog food recall the industry seen the light and now has nothing but the pet’s best interest at heart right?
You might want to think twice about that last statement. The regulations are just as loose as they were in 2007, and no one has added manpower to correct this mess.
How bad is the dog food recall problem Click Link to find out.

Pet owners need to understand; there will be more recalls, but when is the next? The many dog recall alerts that have been announced since 2007 have mostly gone unnoticed by the media. These smaller recalls are still killing pets, we just don’t hear about them on CNN.

It’s already too late when the dog food recall alert goes out. Pets are sick and or dying already. There is no way with the current system that you can be ahead of the curve of a dog food recall. Because of this we you will already be dealing with a sick pet by the time you see a recall.
There are no words for the feeling you get when you go from playing fetch with your yellow lab, to six weeks later burying her in the back yard. You feel helpless when you are told by the vet that her systems are shutting down one by one and there is nothing that can be done to help her.
You pray that she’ll get better, but when her breathing becomes so labored that you hear her in the next room you know it’s time. On the way to the vet you know what you’re going to have to do and you start to feel the loss already and you start to cry
You make the decision and give her one last kiss as she looks up at you as if to say it is time and I understand Your head is pressed against hers and with tears pouring from your eyes you fill the last breath leaving her body
You take her home crying the whole way and you dig a grave in the back yard and say your last goodbye to the best friend you ever had. Gone forever out of your life is the only thing that ever gave you unconditional love no matter how you treated her.
Now you start to think about the dog food recall and wonder what it would have been like if you had not been feeding that food. Your thoughts finally go to the other pets in the family. They eat different food that’s not on the list now, but will it hit the dog food recall list next?

I am convinced that any manufactured dog food could end up on a recall list at any given time. There is only one choice and that is learning how to make my own feed.

I swore on her grave that I would protect her brother and sister. I’ve done over a hundred hours of research to separate facts from fiction, and now I’m confident I’ve found the answer.
