Poker – Chance or Skill?

Poker a game of skill… chance… or is it just a random game played for fun, hoping for luck?

Some believe (and here at free poker game site Nopaypoker)poker to be a game of skill where your chances of being successful, depend directly on you knowledge of the game and playing skill.

Many go so far as to claim it as a source of employment.  The “beginners guide to online poker” suggests that you may file with the Internal Revenue Service as a professional poker player, claiming your winnings and submitting to a 15 percent tax deduction.

Those who claim the status of professional are well versed in the study of pot odds, hand odds and playable hands. There are countless free poker games articles explaining these terms so I will not at this time try to explain them to you rather, I would direct you to research them if you hope to become a “pro”.

Others believe that poker is a game of chance, as is the case in “the state of Pennsylvania versus Lawrence Burns”.

The state has found Mr burns guilty of 12 counts of illegal gambling. The defence claims poker as a game of skill calling Dr. Robert Hannum of the University of Denver, as a reliable source who claimed that over 9 times out of 10 a player who is versed in the game of poker, will overcome the unskilled player.

The jury however (who must have been a bunch of Bushite anti-gamblers), disagreed ruling poker as a game of chance and therefore unlawful. You can find the whole story online, one need only search Lawerence Burns to follow the on going debate.

In the United States, each State has the capability to impose its own laws and thus they vary from State to State. You should know the laws governing your own localities before you endeavour to profit from the game.

However you decide to categorize poker, it is my belief that as a beginner or someone who does not entertain the ambition of making proper money from the game then the best way to enjoy the game, is to play for fun and hope for a bit of luck. Of course knowing the odds and percentages likely will not hurt your game and will also increase the fun.
