The Grapefruit Diet: First a little history:
The Grapefruit Diet was first introduced to an unsuspecting public in the 1930′s and soon became synonymous with fast weight loss. Also known as the Hollywood Diet or the Mayo Diet, the grapefruit diet was based on the incorporation of one Grapefruit (or half a grapefruit) at each one of the 3 daily meals. That combined with a very strict and nutritionally inadequate food plan ensured that those who could put up with this type of diet would very quickly lose a lot of weight.
The problem of course is that the weight lost generated the grapefruit diet and other such crash diets primarily comes from fluids elimination which quickly returns once the diet is over. In its original format, the grapefruit diet is not intended as a long term weight loss program but rather as a very short term boost to weigh loss, often times associated with the need to lose weight quickly in order to fit into a dress or suit that might otherwise no longer fit. By that judgement, one can easily imagine that the reason it became known as the Hollywood Diet, is precisly because it afforded Hollywood stars the means to lose weight quickly and hence preserve intact the perception of their public image.
The Grapefruit Diet: The plan:
Sample Meal Plan:
- Breakfast
2 eggs, 2 slices of bacon, black coffee, 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice - Lunch
Salad with salad dressing, unlimited meat, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice - Dinner
Red or green vegetables (except starchy ones such as peas, beans, corn, sweet potatoes) or salad, unlimited meat or fish, and 1/2 grapefruit or 8 ounces grapefruit juice - Bedtime snack
8 ounces skim milk
There are no restrictions for the grapefruit Diet in terms of butter and salad dressing one might choose to add and food can be prepared in any number of ways, including frying. However, it is not recommended to deviate from the program and any food or beverage not in the list is stricly prohibited. Grapefruit or Grapefruit juice must not be sweetened and the snack is truly a bed time snack as it can only be consumed after dinner. It is also recommended to drink at list 64 ounces of water each day.
When looking at the Grapefruit Meal Plan, it is hard not to notice the similarities this plan has with the Atkins Diet
The Grapefruit Diet: How it works:
Essentially a low carbohydrate and protein diet, it averages between 800 to 1000 calories per day. Whether you include grapefruit or not, in essence, a diet that only allows the consumption of less than 1000 calories each day will inevitably lead to weight loss.
Grapefruits and their interaction with medication:
It is worth noting that grapefruit can interract with certain types of medication. The reason for this interraction is because grapefruit influences the digesting and metabolizing process and this in turns may affect the way certain medications are absorbed into the body. For that reason, whether on a Grapefruit Diet or not, if you start to eat grapefruit on a regular basis and are taking prescription drugs, it is recommended that you check with your primary physician before so as to eliminate any risk involved. It is often the case that your current medication has no known interaction with Grapefruits, but in the event that it does, your physician can then easily prescribe a safer alternative for you.
Grapefruit Diet Pills
There are two types of Grapefruit Diet Pills.
- Grapefruit Pectin Diet Tablets which as the name implies is a composite tablet made up from Grapefruit Pectin Complex, Cellulose, Hemmicellulose and Fiber.
The second type is the much more powerful:
- Grapefruit Solution, which is the result of a very clever miniaturization of a whole grapefruit, Peel, Pulp, Pips and Juice into a small tablet have been found to give your diet a real boost as suggested by numerous studies. In one such study. subjects who used Grapefruit Solution lost an average of 2.4 pounds over 12 weeks without changing their diet.
Grapefruit Diet, Grapefruit Solution
So far, science has not been able to come up with any solution that guarantees weight loss. Losing weight is a process by which a dieter must undertake a change of lifestyle in order to combat and reverse bad habits that may have been the cause of weight gain in the first place.
A sensible eating plan, some moderate activities and positive re-inforcement are the keys to successful and long term weight loss.
In addition, there are nutural supplements that are able to assist in this weight loss endeavour and Grapefruit Solution is one of those supplements.
Because a whole fruit has been puliverized into a small tablet, when consuming Grapefruit Solution, dieters benefit from the goodness of the actual fruit without its disadvantages such as taste and prescription drugs interaction.
Indeed, in the process of pulverization, the enzime responsible for the actual interaction with drugs is removed which makes Grapefruit Solution entirely safe.
Grapefruit Diet: Fact or Fiction?
I have attempted to demonstrate in this article that the Grapefruit Diet is indeed not recommended for anyone interested in long term weight loss.
Anyone interested in losing weight should stay away from all types of fad and cash diets and adhere to an eating plan that is based on sound nutrition, combined with exercise. A lifestyle change is in fact the pre-requisite for a sustained and sustainable weight loss.
The Grapefruit Solution (the only grapefruit diet pill that eliminates the negative effects of the Grapefruit whilst retaining all of its advantages) works best when combined with a good and healthy nutritional plan.
