Guitar Lessons on DVD: A Guide to Finding Which Ones Are Right for You

There are so many guitar lessons DVDs available that it can be difficult to find which ones are right to you. It is great that so much information is now available to new guitarists and that some of the best guitar teachers are available through DVD lessons than would have been possible years ago, but with so much out there it is hard to choose. Learning to set your own goals is the best way to pick the lessons right for you.

The very first thing a guitarist needs to decide is whether to play an acoustic or electric guitar. This can be quite important in this instance since some guitar instructional DVDs are particular for one type or the other. Technically, both are the same instruments, but they aren’t played exactly the same way. The common electric lead guitar techniques can come off as muddled on an acoustic guitar, but it would be difficult to play an electric guitar like a classical guitar since an electric guitar might have feedback issues.

The rule of thumb most people encounter is that acoustic guitars are easier to play than electric guitars. This is to some extent true, since an improperly played electric guitar can make all sorts of unpleasant noises that an acoustic could never produce. While it doesn’t mean acoustic guitars are easier to become a good guitarist on, they are easier for a beginner to pick up and play without making lots of horrible noises. However, the two work so differently that they feel quite different playing. Someone interested in playing electric guitar starting on an acoustic may spend more time trying to adapt to the electric than they would have if they learned from scratch.

When looking for learn to play guitar DVDs, it is quite important to consider which type of guitar that you wish to play. Changing between the two and learning the nuances of each can slow your progress a bit early on, which is inconvenient for a person that only wants to play one or the other. You can quite easily learn both through guitar lessons dvd , but focusing on one or the other as a new guitarist can be more enjoyable and quicker.

Guitar is not one homogenous instrument where the techniques are the same for any style, unlike say a piano or drums, where composition is the bigger issue between styles. There are so many ways to do the same thing on a guitar, that even two people in the same genre may not play very similar. Focusing on the style you want will ultimately make it faster and more enjoyable to learn playing guitar.

It is customary for most beginner guitar instructional dvd to start with the usual assortment of open chords, strumming, and other techniques that see the widest usage among guitarists. This is a good starting point for many new guitarists, particularly ones not focused on a genre, but some people may not find it as good a place to begin training.

However, funk, blues, metal, and classical guitarists won’t find this the best starting point. Luckily, there are lessons more in line with these styles and starting in them, but it is important to recognize that if there is a particular style you want to play, you do need to focus on learning that. The general approach is a good starting point for people not sure what they want to do or want to be more well rounded, but people with a focus on a particular style may want to focus on that particular style. Even if learning that style is more difficult, you will be far more motivated to put in the practice and time if you enjoy what you are playing then the generic approach.

Setting goals is an important part of becoming a better guitarist. Be able to find the guitar lessons DVDs most appropriate for you can make learning to play the much more enjoyable. How to tune your guitar

If you learn and practice one method of tuning, things will become clearer and you would find your self better placed while learning. Here is one of the simplest and most commonly used methods of tuning your guitar is given below:

As you learn how to play electric guitar you know a guitar has six strings from the thickest to thinnest that is from E to E. And in between you have A, D, G and B if we go from thickest to thinnest.

The standard tuning method is most common in tuning both Electrical and Acoustic guitars following notes from low to high: E A D G B E.

  1. Here we use E string as a reference note. This is one string that you can trust not to detune easily. If you have another instrument to compare say a Piano, you can tune it to first E below middle C.
  2. The A String: Now keep your figure on the “A” note (Fifth fret) and Pluck the fifth and sixth string in turn. As you do that, adjust the fifth string tuning machine until both notes sound same.
  3. The D String: Pluck the D string and compare it to sound of fifth fret A string. Now Pluck both the fifth and fourth string in turn and adjust tuning machine till both sound the same.
  4. The G String: Place your left hand first finger just behind fifth fret of D string. Pluck both the fifth-fret D and G string alternatively. Tune your G string until they sound same.
  5. The B String: Place your left hand first finger on fourth fret (not fifth fret), then tune B string till they sound same.
  6. The E string: Place the first finger of left hand on fifth fret of B string, and then tune your string E till they sound same. As the E string on the bottom is the thinnest, please take care while tightening the tuning machine as it can break easily.

Only problem with this method is that if you get one string wrong all the following strings will also be wrong. If tuned accurately, the interval between two E strings should be exactly two octaves.
