Want to Learn Japanese Online? You Won’t Be Disappointed!

December 7, 2010

Want to learn Japanese online? You really should give it a try! Online learning is so much more practical than studying at a college, which locks you into a particular time and place. You really can learn Japanese online – in your pajamas, if you like! But if you type “learn Japanese online” into your favorite search engine, you’ll get too many results to try each one. That’s where I come in.

First, make sure to choose a course with a good, clear audio track. I don’t mean to imply that reading material has no place in language instruction, because it most certainly does. But if the course you’re evaluating is mostly reading with very little audio, it’s probably not a good course. Why? Because there’s no way to learn a living language except by hearing it. Now you know the purpose of those dialogues!

But mastering Japanese online isn’t just about dialogues. At some point, you’re going to have to deal with the fact that Japanese isn’t written using the same alphabet as English. It’s possible to write “Romanized” Japanese, which is just spelling Japanese words out using our letters so English-speakers can read them. It’s absolutely fine to learn Japanese online using Romanized spelling, but as soon as possible you’re going to want to learn the writing systems used by the Japanese.

Learning Japanese online sounds extremely difficult, but it’s certainly not impossible. When you’re searching for a good Japanese instructional program, look for one with a good support system. By support system, I’m talking about a forum where you can interface with a Japanese speaker whenever you need help. Without a support system, you may find yourself becoming overwhelmed. Fortunately, there are quite a few programs with learner’s forums these days, so don’t give up until you find one that works for you.

Finally, don’t forget to match your language instruction method to your personal learning style. If you learn best by listening, you’re an auditory learner, and you need a program focusing on listening and speaking. Visual learners – people who learn best by reading – ought to choose programs that incorporate a lot of text. And if you’re a kinesthetic learner, you learn best by doing something; you should choose a program that includes activities like video games.

If you do your homework first, you’ll find the perfect way to learn Japanese online, and you’ll be amazed at how much fun it will be!

Learning Japanese online is easy if you use the correct course. I recommend you give Rocket Japanese a try by reading my user review first.
