Carp Fishing Holidays in France

Written on December 26, 2008 – 5:09 am | by williams

France is a country that has a wonderful variety of fishing from the North through to the South and caters for fly fishing, course and game fishing on a wide range of rivers and lakes. And also there are loads of coast lines used for the sea angler to have fun too.

Carp fishing in france, cat fishing, not forgetting course and pike fishing are just some of the holidays that you can enjoy in France and whilst some places cater for the dedicated angler, others are more family orientated with accommodation and activities for the non fishers.

There are many types of fishing vacation available and game fishing, you would have to book from around the centre up to the end of March until around the first week of September, that is the only time frame you are authorized to fish for trout in France.

France has no exception like setting the rules that what specific fish to catch, where to catch certain type of fish and what equipment to use or bring during fishing not like other countries.

Intended for some, it could be intimidating outlook, in particular if you are not effortlessly speak in French, and even if some areas it will be not difficult unlike others to arrange your fishing site and license, it is frequently easier to pre-organize you fishing holiday, so do gather details as possible.

When you plan to get your fishing permit, these could generally be obtained from the local fishing tackle shop or alternative from the local bar or tobac. Local tourist information board can assist you if you are not sure on what is necessary which can also give you maps on the right place to fish and place you cannot.

If you prefer only to go on France for a short time, then you can have what is known as The Carte de Peche de Vacances, which covers an angler for up to fifteen consecutive days and can be used between 1st June and 30th November. But in whatever way, outside these dates an annual fishing licence is mandatory.

When activity like catfish and carp fishing most of the people will want to opt on a dedicated lake, you can get a licence to do this in the local rivers or public lakes. Planning to go on privately owned lake for carp fishing, cat fishing, etc then you don’t have to worry about obtaining your own individual licence this will be usually prepare by the travel agency or the owner under their regulations.

Boats are authorized to be used quite a bit in France, but you might want to have a separate part to your license to enable you to apply a boat, even if it is only for baiting. But be alert if there is an echo sounder in your boat because you are not permitted to have this and your paraphernalia in the boat at the same time!

Also, night fishing is prohibited in a lot of places in France, but when on a private fishing lake, or if with the correct licence on certain waters, this can be allowed. Unless, then you can merely trawl partially hour behind morning to half hour before the end of the day. Many places on the rivers Seine, Rhone, Mosselle, Oise, Madine and Rhine, etc do believe night fishing, but there are some places that do ban the use of a bivvy or cover even if night fishing is allowed and you may only get away with a brolly!

Tarpon Fishing in Key West Florida

Written on December 26, 2008 – 5:09 am | by williams

The tarpon is one of the world’s finest sporting fish. Stunningly beautiful and known as the Silver King, their aerobatic antics make them a favourite of fishermen worldwide. From March to July thousands of tarpon travel through Key West Harbour en route to the spawning grounds and anglers flock into town for the chance to do battle with them.

There are many different methods for catching tarpon, the style changing depending on the type of water that you are fishing. Tarpon can be found on sand or mangrove flats and also in shallow river inlets. For these venues the preferred method is either fishing a lure or a fly (with a strong fly rod. At other venues such as Islamorada the preferred method is livebaiting with small fish such as pilchards or herring. The preferred method in Key West is using a by-product from shrimp fishing. Let’s explain what we mean by shrimp boat trash. Lots of shrimp fishing boats work the waters in the Gulf of Mexico and besides netting shrimp they also catch a lot of small fish called menhaden. These are bagged up in onion sacks and sold as bait to the tarpon fishing boats in Key West.

The method sees the Captain cutting these small fish into small pieces and continually throwing them behind the anchored boat to attract the tarpon. The anglers fish with a whole menhaden on the hook, and it is drifted back in the tidal flow towards the feeding tarpon.

The tackle suggested when fishing for tarpon in Key West is very straight forward. Our favourite rod for tarpon fishing is the 7ft 9in Conolon Boat  12-20 lb test curve rod from ABU. It retails here in the UK at £74.99. There is also a 3 piece version (the Conolon Boat Traveller) which might be more suited to the jet-setting traveller. That one sells for £79.99 in the UK. By the way, I use that Conolon Boat rod whilst fishing for sturgeon in British Columbia and last year landed my best ever fish measuring 9ft 1inch and weighing…who knows, with only two of us fishing there’s no way we could lift such a beast but we estimated it at around 400 lbs. Anyhow, returning to tarpon fishing. The most widely used reels whilst fishing for tarpon are the TLD15 and TLD20 lever drag multipliers from Shimano. The TLD 15 sells for around £80 in the UK, whereas the TLD 20 is about £15 more expensive. Whatever reel you choose, it has to be super free running, because you’re trying to make your bait drift down in the tide at a similar speed to the pieces being introduced by the Captain. I prefer to use the bigger TLD 20 because the larger spool turns slower when you are running your bait down in the tide and it needs less turns to reel in when your bait has drifted as far you want. You will want the reel completely loaded with nylon, I prefer the grey Ande nylon in breaking strains of either 15 or 20 lbs. At the end of the line is tied a 10 foot leader of 50 lb fluorocarbon and a large circle hook. Naturally all of the charter boats have excellent tackle for you to use should you not have your own.

OK, now down to the fishing. Your captain will have taken you to one of the favourite spots, perhaps the entrance to Key West Harbour, the yacht basin, the North West Channel or maybe Bokacheeka. The boat will be anchored at the bow and if there are other people tarpon fishing, their boat will probably be only a few feet away. The plan is that if everybody is chumming then there will be a good supply of food going down to the fish, keeping them in one substantial shoal rather than splitting them up. The skipper will start chumming with the cut up baits whilst you hook a whole fish onto your hook. There’s a particular way to hook these baits but don’t fret, the captain will show you how. You now let your little fish drift down the tide, paying very close attention to your line as it runs from the spool of the reel. A bite can be quite gentle and will normally be detected by the spool of the reel suddenly running faster. As soon as a bite is detected you need to reel like hell….don’t strike !!. The beauty of a circle hook is that it seemingly hooks the fish itself once you tighten the line by reeling in as fast as possible.

Once a fish is hooked all hell will be let loose, the tarpon will likely leap out of the water and it will certainly start running towards Cuba !!. Remember when playing a tarpon that if he jumps he’ll throw the hook unless you immediately lower the rod to lessen the tension on the line. This dropping of the rod is known as “bowing to the King”, and you’ll get plenty of stick from anybody else on the boat if you lose a tarpon because he jumped and you didn’t bow. If the hooked fish is a decent size the Captain will release the anchor and set off to follow the fish. It’s not unusual to unhook a tarpon a mile away from where it was hooked. It can be a tiring and long fight but with a bit of luck you will eventually have the tarpon alongside the boat ready for a swift photograph before it is safely released to fight again some other day. I remember a ‘first-timer’ fishing with us one year. He hooked his first tarpon and as it jumped he excitedly asked “how big is that” to which one wag replied “about forty minutes” !!.

The Right Equipment Needed to Start Snorkeling

Written on December 24, 2008 – 3:54 am | by williams

Snorkeling Equipment

The Right Equipment for Snorkeling

To fully enjoy snorkeling, one must have the right kind of snorkling equipment. Snorkeling is a water recreational hobby that allows the swimmer to float just at the surface of the water looking down. The swimmer has the opportunity to see the underwater world right before his very eyes with the aid of the right snorkling equipment.  These are the basic snorkeling gear for most swimmers. Many other kinds of snorkeling equipment may be required if you are not such a strong swimmer or you have other intentions other than snorkeling in mind.

The Safety Mask

The mask that is used is an important snorkling equipment. The mask covers almost all of the upper face of the snorkeler. It is to this mask that the snorkel is affixed. The mask also provides protection for the snorkeler with a comfortable view of under water life. Sea water can sting your eyes, which is one of the primary reasons why the mask covers the eyes. This snorkling equipment also protects the nose from the water by covering it.

The Snorkel(Breathing tube)

This snorkeling gear is the basis for the water activity’s name. The snorkel is a tube with some well placed angles to accommodate the breathing apparatus’ attachment to the face mask and the mouthpiece that the snorkeler puts in the mouth. This snorkling equipment allows the swimmerto breathe while facing downwards looking at the ocean scenery. The snorkel needs to be positioned in such a way that while the mouthpiece is in the swimmer’s mouth the other end points upwards for maximum breathing. A snorkel facing downward might allow water to get in and interfere with the proper breathing of the swimmer.

There are more newer, innovative snorkels that appear to be able to prevent water from getting in the tube while allowing the swimmer to breathe in air. There are many complications that arise from using this snorkling equipment, which is why divers still prefer the basic kind of snorkel.

The Flippers

This snorkling equipment is not required for snorkeling but they can actually add to a swimmer’s maneuverability as well as speed when in the ocean. The extra propulsion that the fins add to the swimmer is necessary when in choppy waters, if swimming in a current or trying to avoid threats.

These pieces of snorkling equipment are the basics that one needs to start snorkeling. Remember, always have your safety in mind when snorkeling and do not get overwhelmed with the amazing views that you see.

Light Tackle Fishing in Key West

Written on December 24, 2008 – 3:54 am | by williams

The Florida Keys stretch some 100 miles out into the ocean and have oceans on all sides and fish galore. Several of the Keys have built an enviable reputation for top class sport but for many years now Key West has held the reputation of being simply the best sport fishing location in North America simply for the huge selection of species that inhabit the oceans around the island. Fishing in the Florida Keys attracts anglers from around the world and for very good reasons.

The inshore fishing around Key West includes fishing for tarpon, permit or sharks, the reef offers snapper and grouper and offshore there’s a whole host of species including dolphin, sailfish, wahoo, kingfish, tuna and cobia. With such a variety of species and with water on all sides you’ll be hard pressed to find an excuse for a bad day’s fishing whatever the weather gods can throw at you.

Although there are a number of offshore boats working out of Key West, our primary interest is light tackle fishing. If you are not a regular saltwater angler you will be wondering what we are referring to, so we’ll begin with a quick explanation. An offshore boat is bigger with a greater degree of luxury which might include a large air conditioned lounge and full bathrooms. They motor around the ocean towing a number of baits behind the boat and once a fish is hooked the designated fisher sits in a fighting chair to bring the fish to the boat. A light tackle boat is quite a bit smaller, being somewhere around 26 – 30 ft long, with no accomodation and an open deck. Normally powered by a pair of powerful outboard motors, they reach great speeds and are able to fish spots many miles from Key West. Each person on the boat is armed with a rod and reel, and when a bite is detected it is the angler’s job to hook and reel in the fish unaided. The offshore captains will normally operate in water at least 200 feet deep whereas the light tackle boats are much more versatile operating in water anything between 20 feet deep for tarpon in the harbor to 200 ft deep offshore whilst fishing for dolphin, wahoo or sailfish.

Now don’t get the wrong impression of light tackle fishing, it’s equally suited to beginner or expert. All of the captains are very helpful and they will do their very best to make sure that you have a great day’s fishing, and maybe a fish or two to have prepared at one of the local seafood restaurants. All of the light tackle boats have an excellent selection of fishing tackle for you to use if you don’t have your own gear. All you need to take with you for a great day on the water is sunscreen, sunglasses a hat and your food and drink for the day.

Planned future articles include a more detailed description of a day fishing for grouper, tuna, sailfish or tarpon, but for the time being we’d suggest that you to book a trip and catch some of our wonderful fish.

Boat Accessories that can take a beating And Keep On Ticking

Written on December 24, 2008 – 3:54 am | by williams

There are numerous Johnson Boat accessories someone can mount to their vessel to show them their way home if they become lost, help them locate the fish beneath the water or just make touring the lake more enjoyable.. Many of the electronic marine accessories developed for water craft can also be found in versions for dry land, but when mounting them on a vessel, the durability to withstand the rigors of watercraft life can make them a better deal

It is not just the water spray that can get on a lot of the nautical accessories, that make these accessories better for onboard use. Boats have no suspension, other than the little cushion riding on the water provides, and in choppy surf the ride can get real rough. The marine accessories bouncing around on their mounting hardware take a beating every time the boat leaves the dock and toughness is built into those items made for the aquatic life..

On the other hand, if you are only going to use the boat when the water is calm and don’t plan to ride across the wake of other boats, marine accessories will not be necessary and cheaper models for the home or motor vehicle use will most likely do the job. Although, in all probability life on the water can be wild and wet and boat will want marine accessories to withstand the challenge.

Marine Accessories for Safety

From speedometers to depth finders, there are many accessories on the market. You may like a zercom depth finder that will notify you if you are too close to the waters bottom. To stay in touch with other boaters or those on shore you may like a Two Way radio

In addition to the above marine accessories available for safety, there are other accessories that keep in mind the various ages of potential passengers. One of the most common boat accessories purchased, is a ladder to help people get back onboard after swimming. Getting over the side can be difficult for many people, considering there are no footholds on most boats. The removable ladder can be lifted while traveling and is one of the most common marine accessories available.

Accessories To Protect The Boat like Dock ropes, fenders for the boat and bumpers for the dock are also popular marine accessoriesto help maintain the appearance of the boat. By visiting any number of internet or traditional boating outlets, the number of marine accessories to be had may surprise even the most experienced boater.

A Refracting Telescope Can Expand the Universe

Written on December 23, 2008 – 8:50 am | by williams

In the world of astronomy, different types of telescopes are used to view the stars and planets.  However, it is the refracting and reflecting telescope that represent the two basic types of telescope used by today’s novice and professional astronomers.   Of these two telescopes, the refracting telescope has the longest history and has been in use for centuries.   Its design was developed around the 15th century and is still a very popular telescope in the twenty-first century.  Actually, a refracting telescope is one of the oldest telescope designs still in use by today’s astronomers.

The Basics of a Refractor Telescope

The refracting telescope, sometimes referred to as a refractor telescope, consists of multiple concave lenses which allow the incoming light to be refracted, resulting in images that are brighter and larger.  These qualities make the actual images appear much larger than viewing with the naked eye.   These refractors gather the incoming light and bend it, allowing you to view objects from a distance.  This magnification is what provides you with the ability to clearly view the stars and night sky. Even though refracting telescopes look complicated, the truth is that they are basically a series of concave lenses that refract the light.

The Benefits of a Refractor Telescope

The refracting telescope has a long history, with centuries of use and design enhancement.   Over time, its design was repeatedly tested, resulting in continuous improvement of its design and magnification capabilities.  This was a real benefit providing astronomers with the opportunity to determine the refracting telescope design’s strengths and weaknesses.

The  has obviously been improved dramatically since the fifteenth century.  Even with the improvement of refractor technology, it is the size of the refractor telescope that still poses a potential concern.  As the need for increased magnification has presented itself, the refractor lens has become larger.  This can result in a larger risk of defects or sagging.

The truth is that refracting telescopes have proven themselves across the centuries and, to attest to their value, have remained one of the most popular designs among astronomers.  Regardless of the type of telescope you choose to scan the cosmos, the ongoing use and popularity of the refractor telescope provides assurance that it will be with us for decades to come.

Buying a Refracting Telescope

We know that it can be a little confusing trying to decide on the best refracting telescope to purchase.  But what we found was that visiting telescope and astronomy websites that provide telescope user reviews can be very helpful in making your decision.  So, whether you are considering a beginner telescope or professional model, be sure to do your research and you will be assured of enjoying many hours of star gazing pleasure.

Beginner Fly Fishing Information

Written on December 23, 2008 – 8:50 am | by williams

When people are watching fly fishing on television they get the impression that beginner fly fishing a simple. However, what you are seeing on television is definitely not beginner fly fishing, what you are generally seeing is fly fishing being executed by professionals who have had many years of experience perfecting the techniques.

Also because it’s television, you can bet that everything going right on the first take are pretty slim. Television programs have a way of making things look easy which is appealing to anyone watching the program, and this is why individuals get the idea that beginner fly fishing is easy. Actually, beginner fly fishing is not easy at all so here are some great tips you will require to get started

Fly Fishing Tackle:

The fly fishing equipment you will need is a rod, reel, flies, and special fly fishing line. Lots of individuals, may their first mistake with beginner fly fishing by getting the wrong line. You’ll notice two things about fly fishing line, it’s both thicker and heavier than standard fishing line. Firstly, sinkers and lures are not used in fly fishing, therefore, there’s nothing to weigh the line down. Therefore the line itself needs to be heavy so you can fly cast it properly. It is also thicker because you need to cast with accuracy and that is hard to do with lighter line. So make sure that for your beginner fly fishing expedition you get the proper supplies and tools to get the job done.

Don’t Skimp:

Many people will attack beginner fly fishing with a mind to catch fish and no mind on the fly fishing equipment they will use to get the job done. Never skimp on your equipment because if you buy cheap equipment and it fails on you at the beginning of your trip then you have a long fishing trip ahead of you. Get the best reel you can afford and the best pole you can find. You can ask someone at the sporting goods store but you are better off asking someone you know that fishes because sporting goods store clerks love to see people in beginner fly fishing and try to sell them stuff they don’t need.

You can be sure that fly casting is definitely the most difficult thing to do in fishing so you will need practice. So make sure to practice casting the fly line and generally getting used to fly casting, hopefully, with time you should be come pretty successful.

Staying In The Loop With Paintball Accessories

Written on December 23, 2008 – 8:50 am | by williams

A-5 paintball marker

Having the paintball marker, tanks, guns, vests and other equipment complete the excitement when you plan to play paintball.  But little do others know that it is the small and simple things that count even before the game begins.  Sometimes the little accessories that are locked in a toolbox are all that are needed to complete a BPS paintball game.  A toolbox is the first aid kit of the game; if anything goes wrong that is unexpected or unavoidable, there is no reason to fret.

The gun’s manual: there are instances in the game when the gun has to undergo  “intensive surgery”.Regardless of the similarities of some, paintball guns are all different.  If that time comes when it needs to be disassembled, the manual can make it easier to put it all back together.  Try to find manuals with problem solving ideas, they really help.

Reserve batteries:  some guns require batteries to function.  It would be such a waste of time if in the middle of the game the batteries died and you could not continue to play so keep new batteries available.

Allen wrench to the rescue:  some players have either inherited their guns from their friends or bought second-hand guns.Buy a set of Allen wrenches when purchasing a gun and keep them handy.

Oil ole’!  Make sure that there is a small can of oil for the paintball gun inside the box as well.  Sometimes weather dictates if the gun needs oiling; be sure to get the specific oil type recommended by the manual for the gun.

Mask lens as spare:  when worse comes to worst, mask lens’ will either become blurry or scratched.  Don’t hesitate to replace them if your vision is impaired as this really affects how the game is played.

Squeegee anyone? Why not bring along a replacement just in case something goes wrong?  It saves time for playing rather than looking for a squeegee.

Cupseals and reserved O-rings:  some players do not know that O-rings and cup seals can be damaged easily and this will hurt the paintball gun big time so it is a must to replace the cupseal before this happens.

And for the player, always have a neck guard around to save the neck from those disturbing shots that hit your neck.  There may be a team available to do first aid when something goes wrong but it would make sense to carry a personal first aid kit.To have a worry free paintball game, carry spare safety equipment like gloves, mask, and pads.
