Being Anxious
Anxiety is a normal reaction to stress. It is a normal response for us to be alert and kept focus either on an important task or speech, during an exam or when facing a dangerous moment.
In general, it helps one cope. Problem starts when we become anxious in almost every daily situations and leads to anxiety disorder.
Anxiety can be accomplished by physical effects such as heart palpitations, nausea, chest pain, shortness of breath, stomach aches, or headaches. The body will treat all these symptoms as a threat.
Blood pressure and heart rate are increased, sweating is increased, blood flow to muscle groups increases and immune and digestive system functions are inhibited (the fight or flight response). Externally, one may experience pale skin, excessive sweating, trembling during an anxiety attack. One may experience a sense of panic while suffering from anxiety.
Panic Attacks
Recurring panic attacks are the hallmark features of panic disorder. It is a sudden feelings of terror, fear, apprehension without any actual danger.
A panic attack comes suddenly, peak within 10 minutes but can subside almost immediately too. However, some attacks may last longer or may occur in succession, making it difficult to determine when one attack ends and another begins.
After having a panic attack, the individual may continue to experience extreme anxiety for several hours. But the panic episode actually causes worry of another possible attack.
It is not unusual for one to become so consumed with worry and fear, that he or she develops behavioral changes in the hopes of avoiding another attack. If uncontrolled, it can result in agoraphobia, that limits one’s ability to function in usual daily activities.
If an attack happens to an individual in an elevator, that person may develop a fear of elevators and this can affect the choice of job or an apartment including where he or she seek medical help or even entertainment.
Because panic attacks feels ‘crazy’ or out of control, it can be dangerous and terrifying. As it can lead to complications like suicide, panic disorder can be frightening if left untreated.
