Used wheelchair

Posted by on 25th September 2009

Freedom of mobility, though invaluable for physically challenged people, doesn’t amount to any thing for insurance companies, who cite smallest clauses in their contract.

Getting a new wheelchair can be expensive, specially if the disabled person can’t work anymore or lost his or her job as a result of an accident. Although not a perfect solution, getting a used wheelchair can be a good fix. Also, used wheelchairs are a cheap option if they are to be used for a small period of time. Hence in case of temporary disability, going for a secondhand wheelchair is a much easier and cheaper option. Nevertheless, one must not rush into buying a wheelchair, and must avoid compromising essential requirements.

When choosing a used wheelchair, one must first check that the wheelchair to be bought is in good working conditions. You should educate yourself on your rights as a consumer, before buying a used wheelchair. For instance, seller should provide a complete description of the wheelchair they are sellling and buyer should be provided with the complete knowledge of any faults or problems that could arise. If it is possible, a written description should be obtained from the seller before buying, so that if later any problem arises, money can be obtained back more easily.

Used wheelchairs could be either procured from equipment retailers or private individuals. Though procuring a used wheelchair from a retailer is a more expensive option than buying it from a private individual, but retailer would give you a product in better working conditions and might carry warranty and other customer support services.

You can search for the used wheelchairs from the advertisements appearing in the state rehabilitation departments, bulletin boards, websites, and newsletters. It is important to keep in mind that used wheelchairs do not carry any warranties or customer support contract. Therefore, used wheelchairs should be purchased with great care. If chosen correctly, not only you’ll find a great used wheelchair, but it would also be a great bargain. Since they were acquired at a cheap rate, so they might be dumped quickly by the user, if it gets an upgraded version or it can afford to buy an expensive brandnew wheelchair, which will be lighter or have a more practical design.

There are many used wheelchairs that can be procured through online auction websites like ebay. One should make efforts to study the cost and features of the wheelchair before procuring them through ads and auctions, so that one should get a wheelchair that is not only cheap, but also useful.

Wheelchair lifts, A perfect solution for physically weak

Posted by on 23rd September 2009

In the past, people with disabilities were treated with disrespect. They were frequently discriminated and mistreated. They had a hard time surviving and earning a life.Fortunately, today, majority of people have formed a different perception of physically challenged people and treat them with lots of respect and dignity.

Moreover, there have been many technological innovations which were targeted at physically challenged people to make their life independent and convenient. Wheelchair lifts are one of these improvements, and fortunately, they’re becoming more and more common both in public and private places.

In general, wheelchair lifts are better than ramps because they require less physical effort. Because they’re operated by a motor and a control panel which can be as simple as two buttons, they don’t require physical strength. This is specially useful for those wheelchair users who have upper body disabilities and thus find it difficult to push a wheelchair up a ramp.

Another reason why wheelchair lifts are becoming more common is because a lot of laws require public buildings to adapt their entrances and exits in order to make  it easy for disabled people to enter and exit. While in most of the cases people generally build wheelchair ramps, though this is not always a workable solution. Since those laws were not there when the buildings were built, they were not designed keeping access for disabled people in mind. Therefore, sometimes an entrance might be too high, or might not have enough space in front of it to build a ramp with a steep that’s negotiable for people with wheelchairs. In those instances, certainly wheelchair lifts make very good choice.

One shortcoming of wheelchair lifts is that you need electricity to operate them. Because of this, they are affected whenever there is a power failure. This is particularly inconvenient ,if a physically challenged person finds itself unfortunate enough to be in the middle of the lift operation.Apart from bearing the inconvenience of being stuck and needing help, physically challenged person is affected psycologically by the feeling of being dependent on others. That’s why, latest models of wheelchair lifts are fitted with batteries by default,so that they can operate in such cases.

Wheelchair lifts can also be installed at home. They’re a good option for multi story houses where the installation of an elevator is impractical. Wheelchairs lifts are best when installed in a staircase rail that doesn’t have sudden turns. However, if there are children in the house, wheelchair lifts must be locked  or otherwise protected from misuse or damage that children may cause. It’s also very important to teach children that wheelchair lifts aren’t toys or rides.
